Yes, you can indeed make money by buying and selling domain names. Many people in this industry have made some severe profit, but that didn’t happen overnight, and just like in any business, it requires patience perseverance to make it worthy of your time and money.
I started investing in domains in 2020, and since then, I’ve been part of 100+ domain sales and just like anyone, I’ve made a lot of mistakes, but those mistakes have taught me a lot, and that’s why I decided to write this blog post on how to sell domain names for profit.
There are many ways to earn money online; if you have any skills and you are busy in a full-time job, you can still make money online by putting that skill into work, and for that, you do not need to spend much time if you spend only a few hours a week that will be enough to make it work.
Now Let’s Talk About Domain Investing
Most investors in the domain industry are part-time; there are very few people who are full-time investors, and it took them a long time to become successful because I believe that you have to make a lot of trial and error to be successful not only in the domain industry but in any other industry and it requires patience, time, and money to create your own effective system.
You actually do not need much money to become a domain investor. You can buy and sell domains with a bit of money, but it also depends on your budget that how much money you would like to start.
There is a way through which you can turn into an effective part-time domain investor, and for that, all you need is $100-$500, and you only need to spend a few hours every week, and that way is selling domains by doing outbound. This method you can find under the “Market Your Domains” section.
So let’s discuss how you can sell domains for profit.
Set A Budget.
Before you start investing in domain names, you need to set a budget. If you do not want to take too much risk, then you can start with a $100-$500 budget, especially if you are new to this industry.
Now you must be thinking about how can I buy and sell domains on such a low budget because all the good domains are already taken, but this is not true; every day, around 90 thousand or maybe more domains get dropped, and these are the domains that haven’t renewed for some reason.
And if you spend some time doing research, you can still find some quality domains every day.
Spend Smartly
If your budget is $200-$500 to kick start your domain journey, here’s how you can spend that money.
A- You can buy domains from drops by using expireddomains.net and register them by paying $8-$10 depending on the registrar fee, so If I have $200 only to spend on buying domains, I’ll go ahead and buy 10-15 good domains, not more.
B- You can do back orders or join auctions on Godaddy, Drop catch, snap names and buy one or two quality domains within your budget. The reason why I am suggesting buying domains from auctions is if a domain is in the auction and someone other than you is also bidding on that name, then it’s an indicator there is a demand for this domain.
Buy Domains That Sell.
Before you go ahead and start buying domains, you need to do proper research on why the domain you are going to purchase or register is valuable and why someone else would buy this from you.
There are many ways to figure out the domain’s value, like how many extensions are already taken or developed, the domain’s length, which industry the domain falls into, search volume, cost per click, extension, and more.
If you are new, stick with .com only because .com is the most commonly used web extension. Everybody knows what .com is. one of the other criteria you can use to check the quality in the domain is to type the “keyword” in google and see if there are advertisers/companies spending money on that particular keyword.
You can also use spyfu.com to see how many advertisers are bidding and fighting each other on that particular keyword you are about to buy.
Price Your Domains To Sell.
Pricing domains correctly is not an easy task. Although there are a lot of automated appraisal tools, like Godaddy appraisal, estibot, name worth, etc., to help you estimate the price of your domain, but they are not 100% correct.
If you price your domains incorrectly, two things will happen either you’ll lose money by selling it too cheap, or your domain won’t sell if the ask is unrealistic.
One of the best ways to estimate the value of a domain name is by checking the comparable sales, and namebio.com provides good enough data to check for how much similar domains are selling in the current market or in the past.
Market Your Domains
There are two effective ways to sell your domains.
- Inbound
- Outbound
Inbound – It means when a buyer reaches out to you to buy your domain, and for that to happen, you need to list your domains for sale. You can either use your landing page and list them for sale with BIN (buy now price) or make an offer.
Or you can use different domain marketplaces like Godaddy, Dan, Sedo to sell your domains. You can use their landing pages and, most importantly, the distribution network these marketplaces provide to get the maximum exposure. More exposure means more potential buyers.
These domain marketplaces like Godaddy also provide domain auction services, and you can run an auction and sell the domain to the highest bidder.
OutboundĀ means reaching out to potential buyers by using different marketing channels like email marketing, social media, cold calling, etc.
Email marketing is one of the most effective ways to sell domains; if done correctly, you can make the most out of it, email marketing is not expensive, and you can use different tools to track how your recipients interact with your emails.
Depending on your schedule, you can choose the days to do outreach but based on my data and study done by other marketing companies; these are the best days/time to do outbound.
- Tuesday
- Wednesday
- Thursday
The best time to send emails are:
- 6 AM
- 10 AM
- 2 PM
- 8 PM
In general, every new day brings a unique opportunity, but in email marketing, sending emails at the correct time can make all the difference.
Some Additional Tips On How To Sell Domain Names For Profit
- Start with your niche in which you are passionate about or have some experience.
- Email Marketing – You can choose your day depending on your schedule and spent like 15-20 hours every week.
- Outbound – Spend more time selling rather than buying; e.g., on Monday, you can do research on buying domains, and Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday, you can focus on doing outreach only.
- To make it even better, you can fully automate your outreach by using tools like Snov.io.
Most importantly, showing up is half the battle.
