How To Buy and Sell Domains

So, you see or hear about some domain sales, which makes you curious; you jumped on to it thinking that you can also sell domains and make some money. You buy a bunch of domains and do it for a couple of weeks/months, and then you give up after no sales.

It doesn’t work like that.

Not just in domains but in almost every industry, you make money on the buy, so buying right is the key to getting your domain sold.

And if you are doing outbound and reaching out to potential buyers, it won’t work no matter how good is your subject line, how good is your email template, and how good you are in sales unless the name you are selling is a good domain.

So how do you find domains that sell?

You got to build your own system, your quality check, your own protocols; in my ebook Domain outbound marketing, I’ve mentioned this in detail about the research I do before buying any domain name, and I call it The rule of six.

Jump-start your cold outreach strategy instantly with our proven templates

I won’t go into details, but I’m happy to give you a quick overview of the process I follow before buying a domain name.

  • Rule 1 – Paid advertiser.
  • Rule 2 – Search volume, CPC
  • Rule 3 – Using Dotdb.com
  • Rule 4 – Linkedin
  • Rule 5 – Google search result
  • Rule 6 – Past sales data.

If you would like to learn more about my rules in detail, you can purchase my ebook from Gumroad by clicking here.

So if you are buying the domain with a pure intention of flipping, it is very critical to do the research, don’t just buy the domain because you like it.

Now it’s time to sell the domain name

IMO one of the quickest ways to sell a domain name is by reaching out to potential buyers by knocking on their doors, and you don’t hit once; you’ve to keep banging on their doors until they don’t buy or tell you to F off.

Some might say, “oh, I don’t want to annoy them,” or “it’s spam” I disagree, and let me tell you why.

If you don’t follow up, I’m sorry to say outbound is not for you. One email won’t get you a sale; the sale is about consistent follow-ups. It’s called professional persistence and often time takes more than one initial email to close the deal.

You might get lucky and get a sale on your first email, but it won’t happen every time. Top sales performer still needs to make contact five times before a deal, and it goes up to 8 touchpoints or more for the average salesperson.

I’ve also written a small booklet on email follow-ups that includes:

  • Over 20 email follow up templates
  • Real sales examples
  • Follow up subject lines with email templates
  • Importance of follow-ups.

If you are new to domains and looking to get your first sale, you can try the outbound strategy below to get you started.

  •  Find a suitable domain in your niche.
  •  It should be .com.
  • Stick with two words.
  • Avoid brandable and made-up names.
  • Reach out to your existing connections in your niche.
  • Follow-up
  • Be reasonable with the price and flip.
  • Repeat.

Most importantly, showing up every day is half the battle. That’s it for now. I hope you like it.

Namaste🙏
